Internet Marketing Is Not A Niche!

October 10th, 2007 · 10 Comments ·

One thing that anyone with experience in the phenomenon that is internet marketing, would tell someone who is just starting out it, is to find a profitable niche and start there. What’s a niche and how do you determine if it’s profitable?

A niche is defined as a targeted subset of a larger overall market.

A profitable niche is defined as a subset of the larger market whereas there is a need or a problem that has been relatively unsolved and it’s important enough that people are willing to pay for a solution.

As such, sports is not a niche. Neither is basketball. Wheelchair basketball is, but is there a market for it? Maybe, maybe not – I don’t know and it’s something you’d need to research.

One problem far too many people make online is that they want to market to marketers. Big mistake.

Internet marketing is not a niche. It is not targeted and the market is vastly over saturated with more competition than you could shake a stone at.

Furthermore, unless you are an expert internet marketer, meaning you’re earning a minimum of 5 figures a month, you should not be marketing to other internet markers.

Besides the fact, that they’ll see right through, you can’t possible know enough or have the experience to tell other people how to do something you can’t do yourself?

You know the saying, “Those that can’t do, teach.” This may be true in some areas, like if you broke your leg and can’t physically play pro basketball anymore, you can still coach.

But if you can’t make money online, there is no way that you should try to teach others to do so.

If you really want to make money online, you need to find a non IM niches and start there. Once, and only once you become an expert and strong force within that niche should you move onto other niches.

Eventually, once you’re an expert marketer earning an above average full time living online, you might decide to share what you know with other marketers. But the money’s in the niche, and the greater and more specific the niche is, the more potential profits there are – but only if people are willing to pay for it.

When you start looking for a niche to market to, remember to actually pick a real niche, not a general broad category like internet marketing. Plus, I don’t need the extra competition :)
