Don’t Become an Expert Internet Marketer!

April 19th, 2007 · 3 Comments ·

It seems that everyone wants to get their slice of the money to be made on the internet. Problem is though that most people choose the internet marketing niche (if you can really call it that) and then profess to be an expert internet marketer seemingly overnight.

One of the funniest things I’ve ever seen is someone posting a topic in an online forum with a title such as “Help – How Do I Make Money Online?” when they are promoting an ebook in their signature that supposedly shows you how to make money on the internet. I don’t think I need to point out the irony.

What’s even funnier is another person who complained that their sales page wasn’t working. They’d had over 3,000 visitors and only made 2 sales. I checked it out, and there were 6 spelling / grammar mistakes in the main and sub headlines alone. Turns out they were selling a series of ebooks on how to help your child read and write well which included a series of worksheets designed to help with correct grammar usage. Maybe they should have taken their own advice.

There are so many internet marketing experts floating around in cyberspace, however the sad thing is that more than 9 out of 10 of self-proclaimed expert internet marketers are not making money online. Sure there are the big names that profess they make millions and they undoubtedly do but the majority of people selling stuff on how to make money online aren’t making any themselves.

If someone calls themselves an ‘expert’ or labels themselves a ‘guru,’ they’re probably full of crap. Although I’ve been called both of those two ‘names’ on more than one occasion, I would not consider myself either of the above. The reason is simple: I’m not an expert or a guru. I don’t know everything, nor will I ever claim to. In fact when it comes down to it, I don’t really know much about internet marketing at all. I know what makes me money and I know what doesn’t and that’s it. I learn something new everyday, sometimes multiple times a day.

Internet marketing is a constant education and will always be that way. New things happen overnight and no matter how smart, fast, well connected and so on you are, you’ll never know it all. And you don’t need to. In fact you shouldn’t. Internet marketing is not a niche, it’s a broad topic and a hard to grasp concept. If you jump on every new thing to hit the bandwagon, you’ll never get anywhere fast.

The best advice I can give you is: If you’re looking to get online and maybe start making some money, DO NOT market to internet marketers under ANY circumstances. There is far too much pathetic competition to make it worth your while and you’ll never be able to compete with the ‘big boys.’ Besides that, I just won’t believe you – nor will almost anyone else.

Instead, choose a non IM niche that is relatively untapped and market to them. Pick one thing / niche / topic / marketing tactic and absorb everything you can on it. It will be far more profitable and a lot less frustrating.

This is so true! If you’re new to internet marketing start in a niche that is not internet marketing. How about a niche that you know something about? Maybe one of your hobbies?

“the sad thing is that more than 9 out of 10 of self-proclaimed expert internet marketers are not making money online.”
